Things I think I think - 6/22/11

We are now officially on twitter. This @thefightknights thing is just weird. I must be too old school.

God that was a bad Strikeforce card.

Don't want to watch the full replay? Look below for highlights

I wonder how judges score jump guards (thanks to Werdum). Maybe they should start using the BJJ scoring for the ground submission scoring in MMA?

Jeff Monson is done.

Strikeforce is losing momentum ever since the sale to Zuffa.

Cain V, JDS, then Alistair still?

Takanori Gomi V. Nate Diaz announced for UFC 135. Let's hope Nate doesn't smoke weed this like his brother last time. I'm guessing no gogoplata for the other brother.

Get ready for an action packed boxing weekend starting with a great main event on FNF.

Felix Sturm vs. Matthew Macklin free on Epixhd.com may be the best fight of the bunch with Tavoris Cloud vs. Yusaf Mack in a close second.

Saul Alvarez doesn't just look good. He looks exciting.

Tickets for the Alvarez Rhodes fight were as low at 100 pesos. I would have loved those seats.

HBO Real Sports report about Ann Wolfe is a must watch.

With the signing now finalized.. SO EXCITED FOR MAIDANA GUERRERO Aug 27th. Best part? It's in my hometown of San Jose, CA. Can you say live coverage?

Very very excited about joining Bloguin. Check them out at www.bloguin.com

Things I think I think - 6/1/11

I think I think...

Golden Boy apologizing to Manny Pacquiao and settling the defamation case may be the best thing that has happened to boxing in the last decade.

Tavaris Cloud versus Jean Pascal is a great idea.

Brock Lesnar is going to be out of the fighting game in less than 3 years.

I was right about UFC 130 not being worth the money.

Speaking of not worth the money... David Diaz won't fight Juan Manuel Marquez for less $250k. (Rampage got 250k for his UFC 10 payday)

Phil Davis looks like he's wearing shoulder pads... without his shirt on.

This weekend's super six semifinal matchup between Carl Froch and Glen Johnson is to decide who will lose to Andre Ward next.

Dan Henderson is going to lose to Fedor, proving absolutely nothing.

Emanual Steward is an overrated trainer.

Rampage Jackson is not a top 3 lhw. Sorry Dana

I'm actually excited about TWO heavyweight boxing matches? Someone pinch me.

This year's BJJ US Open will be at San Jose State! Live coverage coming!

Nice to see Andre Ward re-sign with the group that brought him up.

Rachel Cordingly (Carl Froch's girlfriend) makes boxing girlfriends better than tennis girlfriends.

Things I think I think

Welcome to the first installment of things I think I think. Another one of the writers didn't like my random thoughts happening behind random articles. Thought that I should place them all in the one place. Well.. here we go.

I Think I Think...

That Bernard Hopkins will beat Chad Dawson and fight the winner of Lucian Bute v Andre Ward.

Roy Jones has finally won me over despite being knocked out badly.

HBO pulling Paul Williams V Nobuhiro Ishida and make it Paul Williams V Erislandy Lara is a good decision.

Oscar De La Hoya has had this problem for a long time.

Julio Chavez Jr. and his people can find the best undefeated nobodies in the business. (Cuello, Loriga, Zbik)

Tom Zbikowski will be back.

Amir Khan challenging Robert Guerrero instead of just fighting Timothy Bradley is a sham.

The proposed July fight of Juan Manuel Marquez V David Diaz is a waste of time.

That Nick Diaz was never intending to ever step in the boxing ring.

Quinton Jackson V Matt Hamill will be a pretty entertaining main event.

UFC 130 is not going to be worth the money.

Quote of the week:
"Frank will be facing a bigger and fatter guy now." - Roy "Big Country" Nelson on his upcoming match with Frank Mir in UFC 130

What's next in the UFC Lightheavy Weight Division?

With the recent domination over Shogun Rua, Jon "Bones" Jones breathes life back to the UFC light heavy weight division with storylines and drama will taking center stage.

Jones’ first title defense will be against his former teammate and close personal friend Rashad Evans. Both of which have strong wrestling background, meaning you can expect lots of action on the fence and control on the ground. Evans was originally scheduled to fight Rua for the title but withdrew due to an knee injury in training and Jones was selected as the replacement.

(As storylines go, Evans has quit Greg Jackson’s gym, the gym he and Jones trains at.)

The experience factor will no doubt favor Evans, as he has fought a much stronger pool of fighters, but a year of ring rust due to a knee injury, reach disadvantage of 10 inches, Evans may be facing a tall (pun intended) order. More than likely Evans will need a submission or knock out if he’s to come out the octagon with the belt.

Jones is one of the new young gun generation. He's very athletic with a strong ground game and even better striking. Most of his weapons seem to nullify most of Evans strengths. Of course, he’s virtually undefeated (1 DQ) and has a large size advantage as well.

Of course, lurking drama is here, Dana White has Quinton “Rampage” Jackson fighting the winner of Jones & Evans.

If Evans comes out as the victor, it will be the second time Jackson and Evans will fight each other. Their first meeting Evans easily subdued Jackson with his wrestling and tired him out against the fence. Jackson admits to ring rust due his role as Mr. T play a large factor. So far Rashad beat Jackson in the ring, on the Ultimate Fighter and volleyball so Jackson should be fired up the second time around.

A Jones Rampage matchup will be a good fight. Jackson’s style will make the fight interesting (as long as it lasts) if he can get past Matt Hamill. Of course, just another wrinkle in the storylines, Hamill was the fight Jones was DQ'd in.

Thoughts on Zuffa Strikeforce

All we can do as fans is hope.  Maybe some interesting things might happen.  One of Pride's last events before it shut down there was Nick Diaz vs Takanori Gomi also Hayato Sakurai vs Mac Danzig, fights that may never have happened if Zuffa never bought them out.  Hopefully we might see some legendary match ups before fighters are out of jobs.  Any of the top heavyweights of Strikeforce and UFC would be amazing match ups.  Nick Diaz vs George St. Pierre or anyone at the top of the welterweight division.  Other fighters such as Bobby Lawler, Jacare Souza, Gegard Mousasi would be very exciting to watch in UFC.  For the other fighters that aren't going to get an extended contract or get a "1 fight win or get dropped" contract, I dont know where they can turn.  Maybe Bellator Fighting Championships.  Seems like the decisions of UFC determine the future of MMA.  With that type of power/responsibility they should have a sense of obligation to the fighters they turn away who help make this sport what it is.  I have a sense that Zuffa is thinking "if you're not with us you're against us" and that type of attitude may not help the sport grow.  MMA has come a long way and UFC has done a lot for the sport, but I just hope Zuffa has more than just UFC in mind and do what's good for MMA as a whole.

DREAM mix martial arts promotion and their fights in Japan are an ongoing and always growing event.  Having much of Japan as their audience and fans and also support internationally i hope these types of organizations can become something more than just another take over by Zuffa merged into UFC.

Strikeforce sold its soul for money and is put on a morphine drip by Zuffa.
Pride was slain by Zuffa, forced to go out with a bang with Pride 33 and 34.
RIP Pride, their presentation was amazing and fights were second to none.

Zuffa buys Strikeforce!!

Wow. Breaking news in MMA as Zuffa, parent company to UFC, buys Strikeforce.

UFC Dana White confirms to MMAfighting.com that they made the purchase. While this news brings a certainty to which logo displayed we will see at the end of all of our PPV broadcasts it also bring a lot of questions.

Will this mean an the inevitable UFC takeover much like it did to Pride, WEC?

It seems like Dana White has two strategies when it comes to rival companies: Wait for them to die or when it starts gaining steam buy them out. In this writer's opinion, this may not be the best business strategy. While Strikeforce was gaining reputation, I don't think they were making fans of the UFC not watch UFC fights. MMA fans will watch good fights regardless of venue. If the UFC continues to provide good exciting MMA fights that people want to see they shouldn't be concerned with the other organizations. Who wants to play football in the Arena Football League? No one is going to stop watching the NFL because they now have arena football to watch. No one is going to stop watching the NBA because the NBDL started a team in their city.

Which fighters will come over if they do merge?
Fedor in the UFC cage?
Does Paul Daley come back?
Does Dan Henderson come back?
Allistar Overeem?
Nick Diaz?
Jacare?

Is this good for MMA?

I think this is a very debatable issue. I'll let the commenters and their comments take care of this one.

Strikeforce Diaz vs Cyborg Recap

Nick Diaz vs Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos

Both fighters came in the fight trying to find their range, but Cyborg was able to find a home for his leg kick early in round 1 giving some problems for Nick because Nick’s distance is usually closer to the opponent enabling him to land at will with his boxing.  Cyborg continues using the right leg kick throughtout the 1st round.  Nick tags Cyborg through out the fight with combinations of straights and hook, without commiting 100% to any punch it lets his hands fly faster, doing so, he is able to overwhelm his opponents with multiple punches.  Each shot may not have knockout written on it but if you don’t dodge it, it will do damage.  Cyborg doesn’t use his distance well, when Diaz walks in he can’t land clean because he doesn’t have space to throw, he doesn’t use his feet.  His conditioning is questionable unable to keep what was working for him in the first round, the right leg kick to Nick’s lead leg.  He throws a lot of hooks and winging punches, though Nick takes a few he can see most of them coming and only getting caught here and there.  Nick straighter punches keep Cyborg moving back, the pressure of a taller fighter coming towards you is hard to train for.  The only time you see Nick back up in this fight was when Cyborg was using his leg kicks.  Only landing a big uppercut and a few hooks, Cyborg was getting gassed, unable to handle Nick’s stand up and decided to take Nick down.  Cybrog being gassed and Nick slap on a tight arm bar and finish the fight.  Nick Diaz improves his record to (24-7) with a 9 fight win streak.

Robbie Lawyer vs Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza

Round 1 both fighters get their jitters out with movement on their feet, all that ends with a Souza takedown and easily works in to side control.  Souza, being a top BJJ practitioner, shows the difference skill levels on the ground with great ground control and always threatening with submissions.  Lawler does a great job of scrambling to his feet from side control using hand control to get out of any threats of head choke when scrambling.  They both trade punches as Souza back petals he is caught with a lead left knee by Lawler and starts doing the chicken dance while moving back as he is caught with another huge right hook.  Robbie spends time in Souza’s guard but is unable to put on any offense in passing or strikes.  Lack of action referee John McCarthy stands them up.  Robbie lands a big right liver kick and both fighters throw a flurry ending the round with a takedown attempt by Jacare.
Round 2 Jacare gets a takedown and gets side control and peppers Robbie with strikers trying to set up to mount or a submission.  Robbie is unable to maintain guard on the ground letting Jacare move back to side control quickly after a scramble.  With a leg bar attempt Souza chains an armbar attempt when Robbie tries to escape, and tries to slap on another armbar attempt but Robbie shows his own BJJ IQ by jumping over Jacare relieving the danger of another armbar.
Round 3 Souza starts his attack his a thai clinch landing some knees partially blocked by Lawlers arms as Lawler tries to counter with punches inside the muay thai plum.  The clinch ends up against the fense and Souza is able to take Robbie down again.  Robbie tries to get up giving Souza his back and Souza quickly does a wrestling “suck back” pulls Robbie quickly to the ground and Jacare quickly circles to Robbies back slaps on a body triangle and finishes the fight with a rear naked choke.  Ronaldo Souza ups his record to (14-2).

Herschel Walker vs Scott Carson

Round 1 Herschel Walker takes the center of the ring, Carson throws a right high kick that clips Walker but walker is unfazed and instead pumped up by the kick as he puts his hands down and yells at Carson.  They trade right hands both missing but Walker follows this up with a left hook, right hook combination, the left knocking Carson down.  Herschel follows him to the ground controlling him in the guard and from the back position hammering away.  Carson tries to escape by rolling to his guard and get up using the fence but is caught by a left hook by Walker and ends the fight.  Hershel Walker improves to (2-0) with 2 Tkos.

Roger Gracie vs Trevor Prangley

Round 1 Both fighters were slow to get started on their feet, both trying to find their range no one committing with any combinations or one punch.  Gracie being the taller fighter tries to establish his jab but ends up landing a few knees in the clinch pushing Prangley against the fence.  As they clinch again Gracie gets a front trip takedown.  Prangley stuck against the fence after the takedown was unable to use his legs to get into a good guard giving Gracie a full mount.  Gracie slowly works to get better position cross facing Prangley, as Prangley feels the danger he rolls to escape giving Gracie his back.  Gracie slaps on a body triangle and works to end the fight with a rear naked choke.  Gracie adds another submission win improving his record to (4-0) with 4 submissions.

No Klitschko VS. David Haye.. for now..

Again, David Haye(25-1 23KO) and Wladimir Klitschko(55-3 49 KO) have agreed to disagree. Bernd Boente, Klitschko's manager announced that their talks have fell apart and Wladimir will be once again fighting Derek Chisora (14-0 9KO) on April 30th.

The talks fell apart apparently because of television scheduling.

Unfortunately, this just makes boxing fans care less and less about the heavyweight division. Eventually, when these two fight there will be some excitement. Until then, who really is interested in what David Haye has to say? Who is really interested in watching Klitschko demolish another challenger?

There are only a few fighters I want to see in the heavyweight division. If Haye was really serious about not getting the public's attention he should fight Adamek. They are both smaller men for their weight division and Adamek has proven that he can fight with all the big boys. However, I think Adamek is in the same position as Haye. Why take a hard fight when you can just fight nobodies (Audley Harrison, Vinny Madalone, etc) and make a good payday in your home country?

Until we as fight fans STOP paying and watching these types of fights they simply will continue with their paths. Paths that unfortunately don't cross.

Illegal Knee/Kick Rule Hurting Sport

Once again the issue of kneeing the head to a grounded opponent reared it’s ugly head again in UFC 125 in the Dong Hyun Kim vs Nate Diaz fight. In the 3rd round it is clear from the replays that Nate Diaz kneed Dong Hyun Kim’s head while he had three limbs on the ground. What also seems clear to me from the replays is that Dong Hyun Kim purposely placed his hand to the ground knowing it would cause him to be in a down position. This is a tactic that is used by Josh Koscheck famously and other fighters in the past as well.

While I would love to delve into the fact that Kim was in fact not hurt by the knee strike. (He looked at the referee, realized he got hit by an illegal knee, then proceeded to flop soccer style onto the mat) However, I feel as though there is a bigger issue at hand. The way in which the rule that makes knees/kicking to the head is causing a detriment to the sport by undermining and diminishing the practice of good fighting skill.

There are and will continue be arguments that the kicks to the head to a downed opponent are too detrimental to the health of the fighters and should be barred for safety reasons.
The opponents will talk about the age old adage of UFC should be as real as it gets, etc etc. I am not going to dive into that.

Instead, what bothers me is the fact that the current rules not only allow tactics like this to survive, but they reward it. However, if the issue is fairness, then there is no question that purposely touching the ground to make yourself a “grounded opponent” is acting with the intentional misuse of the rule.

MMA fighters fundamentally want to learn good position. No other sport can truly simulate how badly you don't want to be in a bad position. On the basketball court you get scored on. In the octagon, you get your face rearranged (except for this here example). In BJJ, boxing, wrestling, judo, and every aspect fighters bring into the octagon agree on one thing: good positioning is vital. Giving someone your back is detrimental to a fighter and in turn he gets punished for it, by body triangles, chokes, strikes, etc. Get side mounted or full mounted, punished by strikes and submissions.

Why is it that fighters are not punished for being in the position of being a down opponent and facing forward? Why benefit a fighter just because he is faced the wrong direction? Why enable the fighter to not be concerned about strikes that should reasonably occur under those circumstances in an “as real as it gets” cage match?

Also the question of putting the hand down in creating a down position. Would a person do that in a boxing, BJJ, or judo match? Put his hand on the ground instead of protecting his face or grabbing the opponents hand? They don’t teach you that in wrestling. They don’t teach you that in BJJ. They don’t teach you that in any good martial art school. Even more obvious is the question: would a fighter do this action in a real fight?

Also, shouldn’t the ref’s and the judges take into account the position in which the action occurs? Sure, if the guy is down and there is NO question a fighter kicked another in the skull, no problem. However, in last night’s fight’s case there was no such clear distinction. (I am happy that a point was not deducted)

However, because of the foul, and the blatant acting afterwards it saddens me that we did not get to see a real finish to a 3rd round that had the chance at some great action. I think this is a great time to use a replay. Recently, when Koscheck infamously faked being struck by a knee, the referee was able to see from the replays that there was no actual contact. This should be installed officially. A point deduction should also occur for stalling if this was ruled a fake.

It also saddens me to watch fighters purposely use the rules to put them in positions that are only good in the UFC octagon, not in anything else. Making the sport not only more watchable but more fair is fundamental.

Just like touching the ground to become a grounded opponent? Good fundamentals Dong and Josh!
